“My goal is to deny yours.”

What began as an Instagram biography years ago has turned into somewhat of a manifesto for WHS Hockey goalie Will Schiffman. The senior netminder has been taking away opponents’ scoring opportunities since his first day on the ice at age six.

After moving from Arlington to Westborough in third grade, Schiffman, at age nine, began playing for the Triboro Titans and continued playing with the team for the next four years. Meanwhile, he watched his older step-brother Gavin Wilsker don the Ranger colors on the ice at the high school level. “Seeing him out there, I wanted to follow in his footsteps and also create my own legacy,” Schiffman says of his first interactions with high school hockey.

Schiffman claims that he knew immediately once he stepped onto the ice as a kid that he belonged in net: “I pretty much went right from ‘Learn to Skate’ to goalie. I knew that’s what I wanted to do.”

That childhood decision has paid great dividends for Rangers Hockey, which has played to a 12-8 record this year to solidify what has been one of the program’s best seasons in roughly a decade. Schiffman has been an enormous part of that success, averaging under 2 goals allowed per game and posting a trio of shutouts along the way.

His performance this year has been a steady improvement from a year ago, his first year as the starting goalie after sitting behind veteran goalies Jeff Bernard his freshman year and Jon Ashton the following season. Schiffman says that after a solid junior campaign, “I focused on dropping my goals against and increasing my save percentage, and just wanted to give my team a chance to win in every game.”

That focus has been quite clear, as he has let in just 37 goals this season– down from 66 a year ago– and has increased his save percentage from 83% to 90% during his senior season.

Schiffman’s leadership has been instrumental throughout the season as one of just four seniors and a captain of the 2018-19 squad. He is a clear proponent of leading by example, and has done so tremendously during his career. A relatively outgoing kid, Schiffman often keeps to himself before games as he locks in on stopping every shot that comes his way. Fellow senior captains Vince Pascale and Kevin Flahive take control of the vocal leadership to prepare the sophomore-laden team prior to games. However, the goalie’s voice can be heard loud and clear across the ice during games as Schiffman directs his defense.

Pascale describes how Schiffman’s performance has been one of the many bright spots for the Rangers this season.  “Will has stood on his head for us all season and bailed us out countless times. He’s been a great leader and it’s great to have someone we can really trust back there.”

Will Schiffman and his teammates will get an opportunity to showcase their skills in their first round playoff game on Saturday, March 2 at 4:45 versus Groton-Dunstable.
