Countdown to April Break!
Have a Wonderful Break!

Gay-Straight Alliance "Day of Silence"

The Gay-Straight Alliance at Westborough High School is set to host a school-wide Day of Silence on Friday, April 16th. An event supported by the Gay, Lesbian and Straight Education Network (GLSEN) to promote safe schools, the Day of Silence is a student-led day of action where those who support making anti-LGBT (lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender) bias unacceptable in schools take a day-long vow of silence to recognize and protest against discrimination and harassment – in effect, the silencing- experienced by LGBT students and their allies. Protesting the name-calling and harassment faced by 9 out of 10 gay, lesbian, bisexual, or transgendered teens [GLSEN’s 2007 National School Climate Survey], students will wear cards outlining the reason for their silence. The event also recognizes the vital importance of addressing bullying in our nations schools. Following the school day, the GSA will hold a “Breaking the Silence” meeting for students to discuss their experiences throughout the day. Ms. Vorkink, the faculty adviser, will host the “Breaking the Silence” in room B324. Registration will begin Thursday, April 1st at all lunches.
