The Addition of Chris Sale is a Big Win for The Red Sox

By: Joe Thompson

Last season, the pitchers for the Boston Red Sox performed surprisingly well considering the expectations going into the season. Rick Porcello won the Cy Young Award, and Steven Wright made the All Star team although he missed the end of the season with an injury to his shoulder. David Price had mixed success in his first year with the Red Sox. At times he looked dominant, but he could not maintain that level of play throughout the season and into the playoffs.

Although the pitching staff played well last year, it will be difficult for them to replicate the success they had. Prior to last season, Porcello had not shown himself to be an elite starting pitcher, and it is hard to know how Wright will perform coming off of his injury. Price should perform well, but there are already concerns over the health of his elbow.

Thankfully, newcomer. Chris Sale should be a tremendous help to the team. He has established himself as being one of the best pitchers in the league over the past few seasons. If one of the other pitchers gets injured or doesn’t perform well, Sale is capable to make up for the loss of production.

The Red Sox did not have the same luxury last year. Their pitching was not as deep with quality pitchers as it is this year. Sale coming to the team immediately fixes that.

Although the Red Sox had to give up Yoan Moncada as well as a few other quality prospects for Sale, he will be worth what was given up for him. The Red Sox are still a young team and losing prospects won’t hurt them too badly in the long run.

The addition of Sale will help the Red Sox consistently contend in the American League for years to come.
