Senior Jeremy Lurier and Junior Ryan Baxendale were the team’s leading scorers, with 3 goals each. Yesterday’s victory leaves the Rangers record (8-6)—placing them 6th in the Central Massachusetts League. In order to make the playoffs this season, the Rangers must win at least one of their 5 remaining games. Senior Dean Sudol is not worried. “Our team is coming together as the end of the season approaches, we have it locked up.” The Rangers play away at 4:00 pm this afternoon against North Middlesex Regional High School. They hope to bring home a win to clinch their spot in the playoffs.

By: Michael Colbert
Only three graduates of the Westborough High School Class of 1937 still make Westborough their home; Charlie Fay is one of these people. Fay was born on July 21, 1919 in Westborough, MA. As a teenager, he enjoyed delivering newspapers around town throughout his time in high school. He made eight dollars a week which was “a lot of money in those days,” Fay says. Although he admits he did not enjoy reading Shakespeare, he was an honor roll student and excelled in economics. This pushed him to study business at Bryant College and Stratton Business School in Boston.
After college, Fay began working in the accounting department at Wyman Gordon in Worcester. He bought his first car, a 1937 Ford Coup which only cost two-hundred dollars, to get to work everyday. Although he transferred to the Grafton branch after the war, he worked for this company for several years.
During the war, Fay went to New Zealand and served as a sergeant in the dispensary clinic of the 39th General Hospital. For about three years he administered pills and checked the blood pressures of wounded soldiers from the fighting in Japan. As a career accountant, he enjoyed this change in work. It would be unlikely for people to go into his office at Wyman Gordon for first-aid assistance, so being in the field in New Zealand was a once in a lifetime experience. Sometimes Maoris, the indigenous people of New Zealand, came to the hospital to perform a show; Fay also got to witness the New Zealand culture through traveling on the weekends. He returned to America and married after spending three Christmases abroad and never returned to the clinic.
When in high school, Fay sat in front of a girl named Anne. He gave her the to answers to assignments and enjoyed talking to her in class. Once, he asked her to a school dance, but she was already going with somebody else. However, he didn’t give up and, luckily, there was another dance later on in the year and she said she would go with him.
Fay and Anne stuck together and have now been married for sixty-seven years. He says of Anne, “She was the love of my life, and still is.” Although Anne has been affected by Alzheimer’s Disease, they both still smile when they see each other and their love for each other shows in how Fay cares for his wife.
The Fays have enjoyed traveling to Bermuda. Anne had cousins and aunts in Bermuda, so they decided to take a cruise to this island. They had such a wonderful time that they went on the same cruise again. Fay laughs that there was food around every single corner.
Several aspects of Westborough have changed since Fay was a child. Fay went to Westborough High School in the Forbes Building, not on the campus we recognize as the high school today. Additionally graduation was in the Town Hall. While Westborough High School now boasts a number of sports teams, the athletic program offered when Fay was in high school was much smaller. However, there was an extremely popular horseshoe team, which Fay played on as a student.
Downtown Westborough has only recently seen the development of numerous corporate retailers. The town used to be home to many more local and family-run businesses. But, Fay says that his neighborhood hasn’t changed one bit. He lives in the same house where his children grew up. Though some things may be different, he is surrounded by welcoming and warm neighbors. Fay enjoyed working in and around the house. For fun, he used to take care of chickens in his backyard and gave their eggs away to friends and neighbors.
Fay’s humorous, considerate, and affectionate personality shine with his devotion to his loved ones and hometown. Fay served as a library trustee for six years and his wife was the school nurse at Westborough High School. While Anne used to play the violin, Fay says he can only “play the television.” Fay has seen many changes in Westborough during his lifetime and says that it’s a great town. He has certainly contributed to making it the place it is today.

The March Madness is a college basketball tournament between sixty four teams that is known for the thrilling games, exciting buzzer beaters and the unpredicted upsets. This weekend the champion will be crowned and the other three teams will be packing their bags. At this point in the tournament the four teams that are still left unbeaten are the Kentucky Wildcats, the Louisville Cardinals, the Ohio State Buckeyes and lastly, the Kansas Jayhawks. This Saturday Kentucky (36-2) plays Louisville (30-9) and Ohio State (27-7) plays Kansas (27-6) in an epic duel to see who will advance.

This Saturday Kentucky will play Louisville to advance to the National Championship; both teams are eager for a win and will not accept a loss. The Cardinals have had a few speed bumps during their regular season; however, managed to win the Big East league tournament and have not lost since. On the other hand the Wildcats have been unstoppable in the regular season and during the tournament. Louisville is dominant on the boards, ranking 27th overall in college basketball, led by Gorgui Dieng and Chane Behanan with a combined 16.4 rebounds per game. In addition to their rebounding the Cardinals are directed by a strong, confident, dangerous point guard: Peyton Siva.

However, on the other side of the court the Wildcats statistics and depth is unprecedented. The team rankings of the young Kentucky team can make any opponent shiver. They rank first in all of college basketball, and with that they are 20th in points per game, 15th in rebounds per game, and 10th in the country in field goal percentage. The Wildcats have dangerous players from all side of the court; they have six players scoring ten or more points a game. Lead by Anthony Davis a 6’10 freshman from Chicago, IL, per game Davis is scoring 14 points; he snatches 10 rebounds, swats 4 blocks on defense. Although the Wildcats have the Cardinals beat in every category, the experience and tenacity of Louisville to send Kentucky home this Saturday.

The second game between Ohio State and Kansas will be a nailbiter as well. Ohio State has had a pretty consistent winning season; however, have struggled greatly when matched against ranked opponents. The Buckeyes have marched through the March Madness tournament defeating Cincinnati and Syracuse by considerable margins. Offensively they rank extremely high, being crowned 35th in points per game, 31st in assists per game, and lastly, 12th in field goal percentage. Their team’s statistics show that the Buckeyes are a team to be reckon with and are very efficient with the ball. Sullinger, Thomas, and Buford carry the team with close to 50 points per game. The Buckeyes have great team chemistry and are extremely aggressive on defense and will do anything to stop Kansas from scoring.

Kansas has also had a very impressive season winning 27 of their 33 games the majority of those losses being in the beginning of the season against ranked teams. The Jayhawks have had some nail biters in this tournament but coming off a huge win against the number one seed Tar Heels: with this confidence Kansas looks unstoppable. This team has some impressive overall statistics that show their consistency and depth ranking 36th in points per game, 21st in assists per game and 14thin field goal percentage. Besides having a lot of depth, the Jayhawks win most of their games solely because of two players: Thomas Robinson and Tyshawn Taylor. Robinson per game scores a whopping 17 points and rebounds 12 balls while Taylor also scores 17 points. Between individual and team statistics this game is going to be intense and come down to the last few seconds. Although the two teams are neck and neck in statistics and offense; the Buckeyes will win with their stellar defense led by Craft. The Buckeyes lost to the Jayhawks earlier in the season and are looking for revenge.

With all this in mind, we will be watching Ohio State vs Louisville in the national championship; and from there, Ohio State will be crowned 2012 NCAA Champions.

Yama Zakura, or “Mountain Flowers”, is an Asian fusion of Thai and Japanese food in Northborough. Owner Anna Bouphavichith, won the 2010 People’s Choice Award in Worcester for Best Asian Chef. Bouphavichith is constantly greeting guests like friends, and remembers returning customers. This previously tight quartered restaurant underwent expansion last year, and doubled its size. This formal restaurant is the perfect place for a night out, with table seating or a sushi bar.

Waitresses offer hot towels before asking about drinks. The menu offers a good variety of dishes, from steak tips to mouthwatering sushi to curry. Although the seared tuna steak was disappointing, lacking flavor and served with little sauce, upon bringing this concern to the waitress’s attention, more was soon brought out. The steak tips were also a letdown because they were dry.

However, the restaurant’s sushi is phenomenal, especially the famous Lobster Bomb. The perfect meal at Yama Zakura would start with their Yama Nachos as an appetizer, moving then to a sushi platter, which always includes the Lobster Bomb with two or three other types of sushi. The always appetizing main dish would be their Coco Noodle dish, which is a coconut curry dish with noodles. For dessert, Yama Zakura offers a truly delectable chocolate molten cake, but this takes 30 minutes to be ready, so it must be ordered with time to spare. They also have fried bananas and ice cream which are just as good.

The service is not as good as the food, which takes quite a while to be ready. The waitresses do not visit the table frequently. However, Bouphavichith is always roaming the floor, and customers can ask her for help if the waitress is not available.

The decor of the newly renovated restaurant is appealing. The sushi bar has two rows of seating with a television to watch the big game. One wall is dominated by a specials wall, which looks good and makes it easy to see the specials. The lighting of the restaurant is a bit dim.

Overall the restaurant is four out of five stars, losing points for service and the few dishes that are not up to par with the sushi.

For hours of operation, visit www.yamazakurasushi.com, or call (508) 393-4187.

Yama Zakura is located at 369 W Main St # 3 Northborough, MA 01532.

After falling short of at districts in their first round matchup last year against, the Westborough Rangers Boys’ Lacrosse team has high expectations for the spring of 2012. With only two players from last year’s team graduated, one being the All-American Captain defensemen Brenton Croteau, the Rangers return with plenty of experience and talent.

Tryouts begin March 19, and head coach Mr. Nofsinger believes his team can make a run. “I think our team will be great contender this year and will have a great chance to make a run in the districts,” says Nofsinger. The captains of the team are seniors Tyler Haberkorn, Brian Doran, and Jesse Blackwell. The team hopes to break the trend of poor records that Westborough sports’ teams have had this year.

By Steven Price and Kyle Lemack
“It’s just cool. You get to do interesting things in an informal way,” comments WHS Industrial Arts Teacher Mr. Bill Parsons. When former Industrial Arts teacher Mr. Dodson retired two years ago, Mr. Parsons moved to the high school from Gibbons Middle School. When asked why he switched from the middle school he simply said, “I was just ready to do something different.”

Mr. Parsons was born in the small town of Westlawn, Pennsylvania. Ironically, Mr. Parsons grew up right down the road from fellow faculty member Mrs. Potosnak. In high school, Mr. Parsons described himself as a “bandhead” and a “history geek”. Parsons never thought he would end up teaching but when his dear friend from Chicago frantically called him asking him to fly out to Chicago so that he could help her teach inner city school kids about ancient Greek history, he fell in love. Mr. Parsons started teaching in the summer of 1997.

Mr. Parsons teaches Intro to Engineering, Graphic Technology I & II, Film Photography, and Applied Technology. When asked what his favorite class to teach is, Parsons couldn’t choose one because each class has its own unique structure. His advice to students is love the subject that you are studying and be excited about it.

Although Parsons loves to teach, he also likes to keep time to himself to do several hobbies such as, turning wood, translating Latin, writing, and fishing. Outside of school, Mr. Parsons is an avid Philadelphia Phillies fan. When asked the craziest thing you’ve ever done, he simply responded “The craziest thing I’ve ever done that’s appropriate to tell to a sophomore in high school is when I climbed a mountain in Italy with no idea where I was going and with no idea how to speak the language.”
