While many students and teachers are watching the NCAA basketball games and hoping that their brackets will be the best, sophomore Ashley Chiu has been working on some brackets of her own. Ashley is planning a new event, Minute to Win It.

“It’s based on a TV show on NBC,” Chiu says, “A bunch of people have a minute to finish a crazy task. We’re playing in a tournament style and if they don’t complete it [the task], they are eliminated. The champion will win a cash prize. All the money from tickets we sell goes towards the prize.”

Tickets will be three dollars at lunch the week of the event for underclassmen, two dollars for seniors, and five dollars at the door. Any contestant gets in for free.

This event is new for council and the school. Ashley says, “It’s been fun. I’m glad a lot of people have been supportive and really enthusiastic about it. I think for an event like this we need a lot of support, and I have been getting support, especially from the senior class.”

Sign-ups for competing are still taking place. If you are interested, find a partner to compete with and let Ashley know. She is organizing a bracket for seniors and teachers and another for underclassmen. The winners from each bracket will compete against each other in the championship round. The event will take place on Friday March 30th.

Midterms are finally over, but Student Council took the opportunity to stay involved during this hectic time. Student Appreciation chairperson Katie Heffernan hosted a Free Breakfast event between the two midterms. I helped put all of the muffins, bagels, pastries, and cookies on the table and was excited by the number of students who stopped by and grabbed something to snack on between exams. People had taken most of the food by the end of the break, leaving only a plate of muffins and a few clementines which I tried my best to give away (Sorry to the people whom I forced to take those muffins. They did look good, though). Overall, the event was a success; kudos to Katie. Student Council also helped de-stress the school by passing out stress balls on the last day before exams thanks to Kishore Rao’s hard work. Keep your eyes open for more events from Student Council in the future. Look for the Student Council 50/50 Raffle table at basketball games and remember that Winter Carnival is just around the corner.

Council is also planning many other fall spirited events: members will rake leaves for the elderly and sick over the first two weekends in November. Freshman Meredith Wolpert is also planning a winter themed dance at the senior center for senior citizens in the community. There are so many events in the works, so make sure to ask a student council member about what’s coming up.

Student Council is back for another school year and this past Friday night marked the first dance of the year: the glow in the dark Welcome Back dance. Students dressed up in neon colors and some even cracked glow sticks on their clothing to get in the spirit of the event. The night was filled with lights and dancing as members of the Student Council passed out glowing glasses, necklaces, and bracelets to those who came. Chairperson Ciara Bowser says, “The dance was a huge success and a great kick off to the school [year]. Student Council worked really hard and we hope everyone enjoyed it.”

Even though a fuse blew at one point, spirits couldn’t be dampened and the night continued. Student Council has many more events in the works. After a few summer meetings and the annual summer retreat, everything is back in full swing as the council works at concession stands, welcomed the freshmen class with the banner of stars, and will volunteer this weekend at the Assabet River Clean-up and the Florence House to babysit.

It is hard to believe that the end of the year is approaching; yet, it is clearly drawing nearer. The seniors’ last day of school, Junior Prom, Senior Ball, final sports competitions, concerts, clubs’ officer elections for next year, and banquets mark the encroaching last day of school. Student Council’s year is ending as well. Elections for next year’s EBoard took place before April vacation and the last few events are coming to a close. Film Festival was this past Thursday and showcased the talent of student directors, actors, and animators on the silver screen.

Kiss a Senior Goodbye sales ended this week. Students were able to purchase packages of Hershey’s Kisses at lunch for graduating seniors. Several packages were sold and we spent a day after school preparing these for delivery.

Yesterday afternoon was the Student Council Yard Sale. With rain in the forecast, we were nervous of a washout but the day turned out to be beautiful. Not only did it not rain, but we also sold some interesting items including a television, bicycles, a globe, small kitchen appliances, old Disney VHS tapes, and a fishing rod among many others. It turned out to be a great day.

The Student Council’s banquet will be held this week and this year will begin to come to a close. It has been a great year on Council between very successful events and winning the honors of both MASC Gold Council and National Gold Councils.

Japan has faced tumultuous events recently. In light of recent occurrences, many individuals and organizations have stepped up to help the Japan relief efforts in some way. The Student Council is currently sponsoring a Japan Relief Fundraiser. Chairperson Ayako Mikami has organized bracelet sales during lunches and a donation bake sale last Friday. Ayako has put in a lot of effort into the fundraising efforts.

Ayako says, “We are selling wristbands which say Hope for Japan with a little heart resembling Japan’s flag for $2.00 at lunches. We also [had] a free bake sale afterschool with donations accepted. When people buy wristbands we have them sign red ribbons…to show our support.”

These red ribbons are displayed on a banner in the lobby. The fundraising has gone very well so far. Ayako says the money will “probably go to the Japan Red Cross. My main [goal] is to raise as much money as I can.”

Continue to show your support for Japan. Buy wristbands at lunch or donate. The Student Council’s fundraiser lasts until Friday April 8th.

The WHS Student Council recently made its annual sojourn to Hyannis for the MASC Student Council conference. This three day conference is a fast-paced, fun trip as it combines keynote speakers, workshops to help improve Student Councils, elections for the MASC State Board, and scoring of student councils through assembled excellence award binders. On the WHS student council, the historian is in charge of this binder. This job is necessary in order to be ranked at the MASC conference. This year, WHS won another Gold Council award, upholding a two year record. I had the opportunity to speak to this year’s historian, Jackie Andrews, a dedicated council member, about her experience as historian. The work of the historian is no easy feat.

Jackie says, “ The format of the binder is specific and strict, making the process a long one. I spent late nights writing evaluations and contacting the different people necessary to complete the binder.”

The historian is responsible for collecting “excellence awards” about all of council’s events, including data to conform to state and national standards, and other nitty-gritty details. The requirements are so specific, making the process a labor of love.

Jackie continues, “When it was finally put in the mail, I felt so relieved and when Westborough High School’s name was called at the state conference as a gold council and I stood on stage with our excellence award, the most rewarding feeling came over me. It’s been a great year and I learned a lot about myself and student council by being our historian.”

The WHS Student Council has been fortunate enough to have hardworking individuals like Andrews who dedicate much of their time to the organization.

There are all kinds of state organizations involving extracurricular activities: the MIAA, the MMEA, but another interesting one is the MASC: Massachusetts Association of Student Councils. This organization is a state level association for student councils as the name lends itself to describe. One of our own WHS peers, Amy Haskell, is running for vice president of the MASC. Amy Haskell has been on the WHS Student Council since her freshman year. She has attended numerous MASC conferences and the National Association of Student Councils Conference in Indiana this past summer. Amy is the Events’ Chair on this year’s council which means she oversees events like dances, carnivals, etc. I had an opportunity to meet with her to discuss her campaign.

StuCo Blogger- Amy, what does the vice president of MASC do?

Amy H- The vice president does what the president isn’t able to do. He or she is in charge of communication across the state which includes monthly newsletters to update the different schools. The vice president writes the newsletter, interviews people, and takes pictures for it.

SB- What is your campaign theme?

AH- My campaign theme is Connect the Dots: connect the different regions across the state and make sure that everyone knows what is going on. My plan is to increase communication on the state level.

SB- When are you campaigning?

AH- I’ll be sending a letter to schools in the beginning of February with information about myself and my campaign. March 9-11 is the Hyannis MASC Conference where I’ll do the majority of campaigning. We’ll give out handouts and I’ll make a speech. I’ll either get that [the vice president] or may also have a chance at being a delegate.

SB- How do you feel about your campaign? Are you nervous, excited?

AH- I’m really excited but also nervous because I want to help the state and MASC. I have mixed emotions.

Good luck to Amy in her campaign. She’s a very qualified candidate and we wish her the best.

Members of the Student Council met on a cold Sunday night, bundled in fleece jackets and warm clothing to prepare for a “pilgrimage” to Pump-It-Up.

Student Council has regular bonding events and visiting Pump it Up in Shrewsbury is a new tradition which began last year. A Freshman Buddy event, members go to the venue in Shrewsbury. After an instructional rule video, Council was released into the first arena with an inflatable Obstacle Course, Moon Bounce, and a double slide. People immediately began to race each other on the obstacle course and even attempted to win blind-folded. Aftera few minor battle wounds, we quickly got tired but continued racing on the slides and obstacle course until the time in the first arena expired.

We were then ushered into the second arena with a single slide, bouncer/King of the Hill arena, and a new maze. Some of us rushed into the maze to check this new space out. The King of the Hill inflatable promised a lot of fun. All in all, Pump it Up was great bonding experience. Although it may have been tiring, it was a great way to finish the weekend.
