The Westborough High boys’ golf team has high hopes this season after a bittersweet finish to end last season. Despite finishing with a 14-2 record, winning the league title, and placing third in districts, the team failed to advance to the state championship. This year, there are many new faces after losing four key seniors. Mike Rodenbush, the former team number 1, John Stanton, Kevin Van Dam, and Jack Bernatchez all graduated leaving the team searching for more talent to hopefully perform well this year.
The team returns three seniors: Nic Ross, Sam DiOrio, and Joe Aronson. Along with those key players are Gavin Wilsker, a junior, and Jeff Arnold, a sophomore. Coach Greg Rota is returning for his 18th season and has lofty goals for the team. On the upcoming season Rota said, “I expect them to do well,” but added that inexperience at the varsity level and lack of consistency from role players could hinder the team’s progress.
The team is undefeated through their first two matches. The next home match is on Tuesday, September 10 against Wachusett.
