After Lots of Shoveling, WHS Girls Lacrosse is Ready for the 2018 Season

By Alli Avola, Jenna Lewis-Keddy, and Sarissa Volin

Returning from an  undefeated 2017 season, the Westborough girls’ lacrosse team is finally kicking off their 2018 season after multiple snow days and lots of shoveling kept them to inside practices.

The returning players are coming back from an outstanding 2017 season. After winning all their regular season games (18-0) and making it to the District semifinals, the girls have a big reputation they will certainly live up to.

Among the ten seniors that they lost last season was their goalie of four years and some of their strongest players. Lindsey Bromm and Cassidy Sams, the two captains, are the only seniors on the team this season. With two freshmen, Abbey Riela and Mary Fitzgerald, joining the varsity team this season, the numbers of upperclassmen and lowerclassmen are relatively similar.

Bromm, who has been defensive midfield player on the varsity team for all of her four years of high school, is looking forward to this season.

She comments, “I think we’re all starting to work really well together and once we click, I think we will be a force to be reckoned with on the field.”

Despite losing valuable players, Bromm is confident that the team is resilient.  “The majority of the defensive line has graduated. It will be an obstacle to rebuild this line, but it’s nothing we can’t handle.”

Bromm says returning players, juniors Amanda Parsons and Casey McNamara, will be huge factors in helping this team succeed. Also, Bromm’s sister Madison who is a sophomore is said to be a key player on the defensive line this year which is what the team was looking for.

The team, lead by Coach Colleen Debish, hopes to have a season as successful as last year’s. The girls have a pretty tough schedule, but they’re optimistic that this season is going to be a good one.

Sams notes, “Although we lost some people last year, I’m confident we’re going to have a good season and I’m excited to see how we work together.”

The Rangers will open up their season on Tuesday, April 3 against Grafton at 3:30 PM at Grafton High School.
