Girls Basketball Season Wrap-Up

The girls basketball team finished their regular season with 6 wins and 12 losses. The 42-36 win over Marlborough High on January 26 was a large step for the Rangers after losing early on in the season to the Panthers 58-46.

The Rangers finished the season third in the Midwach B League, just behind #1 Groton Dunstable and #2 Nashoba Regional. They ended ahead of #4 rival Marlborough High and #5 Fitchburg High.

Head coach Scott Kittredge was quoted after the final regular season game, saying it was a fun season with a very hardworking group of girls, but he wishes the team could have played together more without as many injuries or illnesses.

Kittredge added “It was hard to get a full group out there and really play at our top potential consistently.”

Other wins this season for the team included a 53-42 victory in the season opener against Framingham High School and a victory over a strong Burncoat team 58-43. The Ranger’s experienced a tough loss to Shrewsbury, losing by just three points, 36-33.

The team saw strong offensive play by senior captains Emily Burneson, a forward, and point guard Tess Garrity. Senior captain Emily Hannan also had a large role this year with her  defensive contributions, preventing many baskets and tallying up many steals.

Kittredge praised the captains, saying “Our seniors set a good tone.”

With only three seniors graduating, the Rangers are confident about a successful 2018-2019 season. They will look to guards Carolyn Kelley and Haley Welsh for offensive play and junior Grace Buffone to be a strong defensive force. Other returning players include forwards Annie Beckman and Alexa Vassilakis.

Kittredge commented that he “wants to keep the positive energy from this season” and continue improving the work ethic of the team.

The Rangers will play in a three day Westborough Invitational tournament starting on Sunday, February 18.  The tournament serves as fundraiser for the Pat Summitt Foundation.
