From Spain to Westborough: WHS Teacher Ms. Gormley

For eleven years, WHS history teacher Ms. Gormley has been bringing her outgoing and kind-hearted personality to school every day. She began teaching at WHS in 2000 and continued teaching for the next five years.   She then made the decision to move to Glasgow, Scotland, where she would live for the next five years. In 2011, Ms. Gormley returned to WHS and has been teaching here ever since.

Growing up with a mother who was also a teacher and a father who taught in his later years, Ms. Gormley was exposed to a teaching lifestyle. She explains, this lifestyle was one of the main influences in her decision to follow in her parents’ path. Her absolute love for history is what led her to become a history teacher. Ms. Gormley’s favorite topics to teach in history are freshman history and the Renaissance. She actually got to study the Renaissance in Florence, Italy.

Ms. Gormley is also the advisor for  the Rangers for a Cure club.  Rangers for a Cure is a club for students who want to make a difference by supporting those suffering from all different types of cancer. Ms. Gormley  started the club five years ago when a student wanted to help her dance teacher who was going through cancer herself.  The club’s mission is close to Ms.Gormley’s heart because, sadly, both of her parents have passed away due to cancer. Over the years, the club has expanded and achieved amazing results. Students keep  joining and they feel  as if they are making a difference.

In her free time, Ms. Gormely loves to travel to different countries around the world.  When asked about her future travel plans, she explains that she and her husband WHS history teacher Mr. McIntyre are going to Panama for February break. They also plan on going back to Scotland and Spain to visit family and friends.  There is also a possible trip to Thailand to visit her uncle.

Some of her other favorite things include:  watching comedy movies, exercising and also binge-watching with her husband t.v. shows  “Scandal” and “The Office.”

Lastly, Ms. Gormley enjoys baking new recipes and spending time with friends and family. She shares that if she were to do something outside of the history field, she “would love to run a cafe” saying it would be “nothing too fancy, but where people could enjoy my baked goods.”

To inspire her students, Ms. Gormley draws upon her mother who was a role model for her as well as Ms. Gormley’s favorite quote “you have to walk the walk, not just talk the talk.” And as her students will say, Ms. Gormley is definitely walking the walk.

great article!! I enjoyed how you provided a lot of information about her background, specifically all of her travelling, and also including what she does in the WHS community other than just teaching history
