By now, you have probably heard about the show, 13 Reasons Why, that’s taking over Netflix. The show is based on the book by Jay Asher and is about a series of tapes left behind by high school student Hannah Baker. In the 13 tapes, she explains why she took her own life. 13 Reasons Why is an influential show that demonstrates how real issues such as suicide, sexual assault, and bullying are and resonate a message with the viewers about how they should treat people.

However, a second season is going to air on Netflix in 2018 with which is a decision I do not agree. First of all, there is no second book out, and if Asher decides to write a second book, what would it be about? The current, suspenseful ending of the show allows the viewers to be creative about what they think happens to all the characters. Hannah’s story is over, all of the tapes have already been revealed. Another season would take light away from her story, and that would take the focus away from the important message of the show.

Another season would have continuing drama that would now seem unrealistic and unrelatable. 13 Reasons Why was so popular was because so many people could connect to its issues and realize they are not alone. The show also opens viewer’s eyes to what some people experience. A second season would just add more unnecessary turmoil and would make it seem unrealistic and repetitive. The important messages in the show would get overshadowed by chaos.

Finally, I think the reason a second season is being released is to make more money off the show. The popularity of the show has made a lot of money for Netflix, and adding a second season could have the potential to make just as much, so obviously another season would be created. This does make sense, but this show does not require a second season.
