Passion For Fashion: Junior Merideth Welch

By Lea Reinberger

Merideth Welch is a junior here at Westborough High School. If you haven’t already met her in person you have probably seen her walking around in school, always wearing new, trendy and unique outfits. Her love for fashion is something she now wants to share with other students here at school. That’s why she has started a fashion club, where everyone is welcome who wants to get a little deeper insight into fashion.

From a young age on Welch was interested in fashion. “I dressed up as Disney princesses when I was young.” Fashion allows her to express herself on the outside. Like most teenagers, Welch finds her inspiration online on social media, but she also says she likes to walk around in New York City to get inspired. ”I like to get inspiration from the street,” she says. She also likes to get her inspiration in museums, art or from music. When she is asked about her fashion role model, she replies “So many,” but one of them is “Suki Waterhouse” a model and actress “and Rachel from the TV show Friends.”

Just like her role models, Welch describes her style as “Very relaxed, formal and classic American.” “I like working with different shapes,” she says. She also prefers to wear black and white instead of colorful outfits.

Welch also describes herself as “not a big trend follower.” She explains that if too many people wear the same outfit she wouldn’t like to wear it too. She also says that she wears some clothing over many years, regardless of whether they are trendy right now.

To the question what fashion means to her, Welch says: “Fashion means YOU.” “Fashion is unique and all over the world.” A place where fashion will have more purpose than before will be at Westborough High School. In a few weeks when Welch opens the fashion club, she is inviting everyone who is interested in fashion and art. “You can just come over to get inspiration, sketch, design and create. Work with people who have the same interests and just have fun.”

The club will inform its members on the latest trends. According to Welch one of the trends right now are “oversize”, “vintage”, “denim” and “chunky silver jewelery.” Welch’s favourite outfit is a “Black vintage oversized denim jacket with a striped t-shirt underneath, tucked into baby blue high waisted denim pants with a chunky belt and silver jewelry.”

If Welch could invent a fashion piece it would be thermo jeans, “because it is always so cold in New England.” One thing that Welch is hoping to achieve with her fashion club is to give all the students more open minded ideas on fashion. She says, “Here in school you couldn’t wear everything that you could wear in New York City.”

For her future she says “I want to be in fashion but I am ok with everything along the lines. As long as it is connected to fashion it would be okay for me.” Her last advice for someone who would like to become more involved in fashion: ”Look around yourself. You can get inspiration from everything and everyone around you. There are no rules in fashion.”
Welch’s fashion club will begin soon. If you are interested look out for flyers in the next weeks or contact Merideth Welch yourself if you see her walking around school.
