Don’t Walk on the Left Side of the Staircase: Freshman Tips for Surviving WHS

Don’t Walk on the Left Side of the Staircase: Freshman Tips for Surviving WHS

By Abby McGinn

Students have been back in school for a few days and are starting to settle in. As a senior, I spent the first day of school along with my peers yelling and jumping around the hallways flaunting our tie dyed shirts. As the day went on, I also began remembering my first day of high school as a terrified freshman just trying to navigate the halls of WHS. Looking back, I realize how much I wish I knew my first year at WHS.

Here is a list of tips seniors said they wish they knew coming into high school:

–Be open to joining new clubs. Sometimes something you think sounds different might turn out to be the place where you meet some of your closest friends and find a new passion.

–Take advantage of teachers staying after school, even if you only have a couple of questions. This choice can often help a lot and shows the teacher you are trying.

–Try to get a Facebook if you don’t already have one. Facebook is a big part of how many extracurricular activities plan meetings and events so it is important to stay informed.

–Try to expand your network here during all four years. Don’t be afraid to make new friends in a class.

–Don’t stress out over every assignment. Try to create a reasonable schedule so that you can manage a balance between homework and extracurricular activities.

–Know your limits. Try not to commit to things that you know you don’t have time for. Learn to manage your schedule and prioritize.

–Don’t walk on the left side of the staircase. It sounds silly but this can really irritate some of the upperclassmen.

–Midterms and finals are not as bad as people say they are. Don’t stress out too much, but also do not underestimate them. Make sure you study enough, but not too much so that you don’t get any sleep.

–Find a way to get to know your guidance counselor. Reach out and set up a meeting, or just stop by during lunch or break to say hi. They are here to help you with any questions you have and to get to know you.

And finally, one of the most important tips of all: Have fun! High school will be one of the most memorable times in your life and you should enjoy it. Make sure to take a break from all the stresses of studying and remember to enjoy spending time with friends and family. Make the most of the four years at Westborough High School.
