Junior Trevor McNamara is the go-to option for both the WHS hockey and lacrosse teams. His third year of Varsity Hockey just came to a close with the Rangers finishing 4-12-4. Despite the team’s struggles, McNamara thrived as one of the three defenceman who saw ice time this year. With that in the past he has started looking towards the lacrosse season under new coach Tim Montgomery. He thinks Montgomery’s college coaching experience at Springfield College will vastly improve the team’s success this season, after coaching turbulence last year.

This season Trevor will be stepping into a larger role after star Jake Foster’s departure. Speaking about his physical condition, Trevor mentioned, “I played hockey for the school so I’m in shape. I consider myself a natural. I don’t really need to do much, I can just step on a field and perform to the best of my abilities. However I need to mentally get in shape, getting my mind into the right mode. I’m not always one to want to play lax,  but, it’s mostly fun and easy so once the season gets going I’ll like it again so it should be a fun year.”

McNamara’s season last year was a highlight in an otherwise rough season from the team. He led the team in goals with 53 along with 12 assists. Last season the team struggled on the defensive end, drawing lots of penalties. Luckily the team graduated most of those players. McNamara thinks this year could be a solid year if they keep the penalties down, play better as a team, and continue the scoring.

Trevor said he has interest in playing lacrosse in college, but as a true student would say, “I’m all about academics. I want to go to a school that’s going to get me the best job out of college so if a lax school wants me and they offer that, then great, but if they don’t, I’ll just go to a school that wants me because of my grades not my athletic skills. There is always club and intramural sports to pass the time as well.”

As the season nears, McNamara looks accomplish his goal of being selected to a Mid-Wach A All Star team. In his mind he had a worthy season last year but he knows has to step it this year with his increased role in the team, specifically as a leader. He also has lofty aspirations of becoming an All-American in his last two seasons. Even though that goal may seem unlikely, McNamara says, “You need to have high expectations, nothing productive happens when you set the bar too low so it’s important to challenge yourself in any way imaginable.”
