Dissecting the fun of Anatomy Club

By Zoe Evans and Carter Bromm

The entire academic year of Anatomy and Physiology revolves around one central question- How does the human body work? Members of the Anatomy Club strive to answer that question not only for humans, but all other animals alike. Through dissection of turtles, pigs, cats, etc., students are able to take a hands on approach to learning the vital structures and mechanisms of life.

Mr. Fontaine, the Anatomy Club Advisor and Science Department head explains, “It’s an opportunity for students to examine and dissect specimens they wouldn’t get to in class.” The program also allows students to make the decision of which animals most interest them and which they’d most like to study.

While Mr. Fontaine has many plans for this upcoming Anatomy Club year, including a field trip to Body World’s in Portland, Maine, he’s worried about the lack of committed club participants. However, this year’s club President, Zoe Evans, is working with other members to encourage students to take a step out of the regular class curriculum and further their knowledge of Anatomy.

“If you enjoy Anatomy and Physiology as a class, Anatomy club is a great way to explore your curiosity and truly understand the similarities and complexities of all living organisms”, says President Evans. She joined the club Junior year while taking the class and discovering her own curiosity about the Human Body. But before any actual dissection can be done, members must work with Mr. Fontaine to fundraise money for specimens. One popular fundraising event is the annual Anatomy Club Pizza Party in January. It’s a night of food with friends that helps provide the club with money to acquire much needed resources.

As long as the Anatomy Club lives on, Westborough High School students are much closer to answering that all too important question; how does the human body work?
