Mr. WHS was a successful show and highly entertaining. The participants included seniors: Will Ashton, Alex Hayes, Ryan Sciba, Andrew Lampi, Ben Ridley, Matt Shunney, Reid Garrity, Ryan Venditti, and Sam Mayo. Each of them did a great job with video interviews, live acting, talents and dancing.
The boys were judged by: Mrs. Potosnak, a Westborough High School business teacher; Mr. Black, a Westborough resident and father of last year’s Mr. WHS, Brendan Black; Mrs. O’Connor, Superintendent of Westborough Public Schools; and Mr. Kelly, who is a photographer who is well known throughout town.
The movie montage portion of the show included the final scene of the movie “Dirty Dancing” performed by Sam Mayo and Andrew Lampi, with Sam Mayo playing Patrick Swayze’s character of Johnny Castle and Andrew Lampi playing Jennifer Grey’s character of Frances ‘Baby’ Houseman. The scene was very humorous and the crowd especially enjoyed the part where Lampi leapt into Mayo’s arms.
Another hilarious movie reenactment involved Reid Garrity and Ben Ridley in which they performed a scene from “The Notebook.”
Ridley and Ryan Venditti showed off their skills as synchronized swimmers in the talent portion of the competition. Their routine was well choreographed and unique with athletic dives and graceful movements of the arms and legs. They did a very good job working together and staying in time as they “swam” to classical music on the auditorium stage.
Another performance in the talent portion of the show included a cooking show by Ryan Sciba. Will Ashton lassoed a giraffe, Alex Hayes sang and played guitar to an original song written by his brother, WHS graduate Ian Hayes. Lampi performed mind-blowing magic tricks and Matt Shunney wowed the crowd with his rendition of “Piano Man” by Billy Joel, while the audience sang along, quite out of tune but at least having a good time. Reid Garrity made balloon animals and objects, giving them to spectators at the end of his demonstration. Mayo beautifully played the French horn to the Celine Deon hit “My Heart Will Go On,” also with some viewers singing along to the lyrics that they knew.
After many videos interviews, talents performed and movies reenacted, the boys headed out to center stage in their formal wear which was provided by Men’s Wear House. While they all looked handsome, Ashton stole the show with his extreme transformation. He shaved off all of his prominent facial hair and combed his hair back, giving him a completely new look.
The votes were tallied and the judges scores came in; Mr. WHS of 2012 was determined. Second runner up was Reid Garrity, while first runner up was Ben Ridley. The winner of the competition was Sam Mayo!
Good job to all of the contestants and congratulations Sam!

Reading this article brings back so may memories and smiles. Mr.WHS I am sure will become a Westborough tradition for many years to come. I myself as a senior am desperetly awaiting the nominations and the show this year. I beleive it’s class events such as these, however silly they may be, that bring the school together and give Westborough the originality that we all love. For the future nominees of Mr.WHS, I wish you the best of luck!
