Westborough High School’s girls’ tennis team has had an unbelievable season so far. They had a perfect regular season and even beat their rivals, Algonquin, which they have not beaten in several years. The tennis team just won their league and will be moving on to Districts in the next couple of weeks.
For first singles, sophomore Brianna Greene has had a very strong season and made it to the final round of an Individual MIAA tournament representing WHS. Sophomore Alanna Judd plays second singles for the team and is undefeated this season. She played in the semifinals of the Individuals tournament.
Junior Pooja Ganesh plays third singles and the winners she hits are untouchable. Senior Captain Ali Strand and senior Ayako Mikami are the main first doubles team, but for the Individuals tournament, Strand played with sophomore Ashley Chiu and they made it to the finals. The doubles team of sophomores Samantha Kehoe and Arielle Sigel also played in the Individuals tournament and made it to the semifinals.
The second doubles team has changed many times throughout the season; senior Cailin Li, juniors Stephanie Johnston and Anna Skidmore, and sophomores Samantha Kehoe, Ashley Chiu, and Arielle Sigel have all played in the starting doubles line-up.
Freshmen Heesun Jun and Vaishali Malik have also been very helpful to the team by playing exhibition matches as well as setting up for the matches.
Strand is very proud of the team and says, “I could not have asked for a better final season on the team. We have played extremely well and I am so glad that I was able to spend my senior spring with these girls.”
Coach Mary Schwartz is very enthusiastic about the upcoming postseason matches. She believes the team can make it far because of the very impressive talent they have. The first district match will be sometime during the week of May 29. The team would love fans to cheer them on if it is a home match.
