WHS Junior Starts Her Own Mentoring Program

WHS Junior Starts Her Own Mentoring Program

Nikki Benoit, a junior at Westborough High School, recently created her own mentoring program at Hastings Elementary School for kids who need just a little extra help from a positive role model. In the program, high school students, like herself, are paired with a child. The high school student mentors his/her little buddy once a week after school. Nikki’s goal is for the child to make a connection with his or her mentor and eventually benefit from the weekly meetings.
The high school students sit with the kids in their classroom, play board games with them, help them out during gym class, or

Extending a Family Tradition: WHS teacher Mr. Collins

Extending a Family Tradition: WHS teacher Mr. Collins

WHS math teacher Mr. Collins has a story behind his facial hair. He made a bet with a student that if the student earned a B or better in his class then Mr. Collins would shave his beard. The incentive worked. Mr. Collins now sports a mustache, although he claims it wasn’t part of the deal.
Behind the goofiness of making such a deal, is Mr. Collins’ dedication to his job and his care for the students. Teaching is in his blood as he comes from a family of teachers. His mom was a teacher, his grandfather was a principal, and his grandmother was a teacher. He is the only math teacher of the group. Yet interestingly, Mr. Collins wasn’t always involved in education.
For 19 years Mr. Collins worked in business before he decided

The Truth behind Bullying…. Sort Of

The Truth behind Bullying…. Sort Of

A hot topic in today’s society is bullying. People ask why kids are bullying, how they do it, and where are the adults while this is happening. To me it seems that these adults have forgotten what it was like being a kid. They scream that bullies should be persecuted as strictly as possible. What they don’t remember is that we all have bullied at one time in our lives.
Bullying is defined by www.dictionary.com as “To treat in an overbearing or intimidating manner”. (Key words: overbearing and intimidating). This is the definition many adults now use for what was once consider friendly teasing. This is not bullying. There are obviously a lot of adults who see it as it really is: childhood behavior, but many others over-react and kids get in trouble.

A Small Group, Making A Big Difference: WHS’s ULEAD group

A Small Group, Making A Big Difference: WHS’s ULEAD group

Westborough High School’s ULEAD group is an exclusive group of students who are against destructive decisions. This group gathers to discuss issues that pertain to what they believe is right. The group members, including the leaders and the students, decide which activities that they would find fun that doesn’t involve any peer pressure of substance abuse.
The members of ULEAD are strongly against the use of alcohol and drugs. WHS Physical Education teacher and ULEAD co-advisor Mr. Rota sees these teenagers as the school’s “role models”. The kids feel that it’s not necessary to abuse alcohol and drugs in order to have fun. They find fun things to do as a group that doesn’t involve these things.
ULEAD meets the first Tuesday of every month in Ms.

A Fan Favorite: WHS Teacher Mrs. Callender

A Fan Favorite: WHS Teacher Mrs. Callender

Everyone in Westborough High School knows Mrs. Callender as one of our P.E. teachers. She even fits the profile of the typical gym educator: having an athletic build, wearing athletic clothing, and eating healthy foods. What people don’t know is that she didn’t originally even want to teach P.E., let alone be a teacher. Mrs. Callender’s plans were to be a social worker and major in Sociology.
Mrs. Callender was born and raised in Rutland, Massachusetts. She attended her first two years of high school at Wachusett, but then transferred to Tilton School in New Hampshire.
This move, however, wasn’t just any old change. Mrs.

A WHS Senior’s Last Good Bye

A WHS Senior’s Last Good Bye

Throughout the years I never guessed that I would make it to this point in my life where its time to say good-bye. Once I’m gone I will not miss school, but I will miss a few things: the different cultures, people, personalities, lifestyle, and dress of the unique student body that Westborough High School has to offer. The lunch food will never be missed, but I can guarantee the majority of the seniors will miss one thing: that’s the “cookies

A Senior’s words about his WHS experience

I do not think I will miss anything about WHS. In later years, however, I may think back on my days at this school and maybe miss something I did do, but for now there is nothing. I can tell in years to come I will have only a few memories of WHS and unfortunately they will not all be good ones.
