Hannah Montana: From stardom to mediocrity

by Veda Awasthi and Sneha Subramaniam

The Hannah Montana Movie rolled into theaters on Friday, April 10. It earned 34 million dollars on its first weekend. The first day of release brought in 17.3 million dollars, the biggest opening day for any G-rated live action movie. The crowd included little girls to teenagers. Although the audiences were large, some were there as fans but others came to criticize and make fun of the “teen pop sensation.”

The movie begins with the typical “diva” life of Hannah Montana. From catfights over shoes to blowing up birthday cakes, the movie held the attention of the audience, but brings no new themes or events. The movie picks up slightly when Hannah/Miley’s dad (played by Billy Ray Cyrus) tricks her into returning to her country roots back home in Nashville, Tennessee where she reconnects with her dashing and handsome childhood friend Travis Brody (played by Lucas Till). Positive contributions to the movie were the guest appearances of country stars, Taylor Swift and Rascal Flatts. Also Hannah Montana and Miley both performed a set of songs that added something new to the movie. The movie continued as anyone would expect of Hannah Montana. As the movie nears the end, things became exciting but also confusing and predictable. It leaves the viewer asking, “Wait, will there be a sequel?”

The whole movie seemed to be a money making scheme, to make Hannah more well known, but not adding any dimension to the character. It also left the viewer wondering which identity she picked since the ending was rushed. The movie seemed to be similar to the other Disney stars exit into the adult world

through a movie- such as Hilary Duff in The Lizzie McGuire Movie. Who knows, will this be the concluding performance from Hannah Montana?

I haven’t seen the movie, but I predicted it would be just like this. This is a very well written article and kept my interest. I honestly do not plan on seeing the movie, but I’m sure even other high school students were curious. It was an appropriate time, because everyone is interested in the ‘hollywood-ized’ Disney Channel and wondering what Miley will do next.
