Faculty's Controversial Win

by Myles Goldman

The following story might be considered a little biased. Remember though, this is the Westborough High School student newspaper.

A Westborough High School tradition was kept on Friday afternoon, February 13th.  The entire school met in the gymnasium to witness the annual Student versus Faculty basketball game, taking place during the last period of the day before February vacation.  The Faculty ended up pulling out a tight win.  The game was at times both physical and comical with a final score of 33-28.

Last year the game had been played with an arcade-style twist as both teams were shooting from specific spots on the floor. If a shot went in it could be worth up to ten points.

This year the game returned to using mostly regular basketball rules.  An exception was both teams used  six players on the court at a time.  The game was twenty-four minutes long. The clock never stopped in order to make sure the game finished by the end of the school day.

A football hiked to Mr. Rota mid-way through the game was only the beginning of the fun.  Before the game, a lounge chair was placed just inside the court. Ms. Pelletier sat there during the game  acting as a seventh Faculty member on the court. Later on in the game Mr. Rota ended up  “paying -off” the referee, Ms. Debish, to reverse a call in the Faculties’ favor.

All of the above doesn’t mention the games most controversial moment.  With about two and half minutes to play the Students were in control of the game 26-10.  Suddenly, the scoreboard was mysteriously changed with two minutes  left, giving the Faculty a 31-28 lead they would not relinquish.
