Go to any school event, dance, or anything else that is cool enough to be considered awesome, and more often than not it will be organized, supported, or at the very least have something to do with the WHS Student Council. The Council itself, led by the fearless (and slightly obnoxious) Mr. Rota, consists of over fifty student members elected from all four classes. This club has been an important part of the school for many years.
Each year the Council organizes, runs, and assists in many popular events, such as Homecoming, athletic event concession stands, and that awesome free bake sale they had last Friday.
Nishant Joshi, a freshman, said that “Council works well together because of how well people know each other and that everyone has good communication skills.” This is true, the members are a tight-knit group of kids with a singular goal: to make the world a better place.
However, they often don’t get the recognition they may deserve. According to a recent survey took of students getting food from the free bake sale, only twenty percent of the surveyed students actually knew that the event was run by Student Council. The rest either didn’t know, didn’t care, or were too busy grabbing and consuming baked goods to provide an understandable answer.
These shocking results show that the Student Council, although an important part of the school, may not be viewed as such by the average student. In fact, a prevalent rumor about the workings of Student Council has been going around for quite some time. It has long been joked about in the student body that Council is more like a secret cult than anything else. This rumor then begs the question; “Do students not know how Student Council is running the school? Or do they not want to know?”
So, although the Council may not be the most famous part of the school, due to student apathy (pertaining to awareness) or simply lack of popularity, it is a very important one. Without the Council, it would be far more difficult for the school to function the way it does, and would put a lot more work on the teachers and staff. On top of that, far fewer school activities would be able to exist without the Council. It benefits everyone who is a part of the school to have a Student Council.
