Field Hockey Wrap-Up

WHS varsity field hockey team once again had a successful season in the fall of 2009. With a solid regular season record of 11-1-4 they became the Co- Mid-Wach B champions, sharing the title with Oakmont High School. In the post season the Rangers hammered Leominster shutting them out 4-0 in the district quarter final game. The girls then moved on to face Quabbin in the semi-finals in Lunenburg. The Ranger team put up a great fight, but was defeated by Quabbin 1-0 in the end.

Despite the tough loss, the Rangers certainly had a season to be very proud of. Senior captain Stacie Teevens commented, “It’s sad that the season is over, and had to end that way, but I am very happy with our team. We gave it our best and I’m proud of that.”

WHS Varsity field hockey coach Colleen Debish couldn’t have been any happier as well. She described the 2009 field hockey experience as a “great season with a great group of kids” being the in the top four of Central Massachusetts. Westborough lived up to their high expectations and may have exceeded them after having lost nine varsity players from last season.

Throughout the season the girls were full of spirit, passion, and the love of field hockey. Together they dressed up in crazy outfits, labored hours of practice and training, and worked hard and played hard. Not only was the team athletic and skilled, but respectful of each other and the game itself. Every team player equated good sportsmanship and love of their fellow teammate at every game, whether a win, loss or tie.
