Jonathon Ashton: Three Sport Athlete

By Justin Gonzalez

WHS senior Jonathan Ashton is a young man who wears many hats in the WHS community and if you ask around who the most hardworking, dedicated, and a truly talented leader is, your answer would most undoubtedly be “Johnny Ash”. With the football season underway, Ashton is one of the five captains of the Westborough Rangers Varsity Football squad. Outside of football season, he also plays a pivotal role as a goalie in ice hockey and defender in lacrosse–making him a rare three sport athlete. Ashton believes that being a three-sport athlete gives him an edge compared to one sport athletes stating, “By playing multiple sports it keeps me in shape throughout each season and gives me a wide variety of skill sets I can implement in each respective sport.

“I always like to be cool, calm, and collected while also remembering that football is all about having fun,” says Ashton.  Admired by the underclassmen and fellow teammates Ashton was voted  to be a captain this season by every single football player on the roster.

Despite an 2-4 start for the Rangers, Ashton has no doubt that his football team can turn the season around commenting, “These are all a bunch of hardworking guys and have that drive to be a winning football team so I’m really proud to be one of their captains.”

Off the field in the classroom, Ashton is an exemplary WHS student and citizen. As the co-president of the Economics Club and in the National Honors Society he shows that while sports are a large part of his life, Ashton is still able to balance the pressures of school. “Time management is a huge key. Planning out your week and making sure you’re getting schoolwork done is an important part of being a student athlete.”
From football, hockey, and lacrosse to his impressive academic track record, Ashton’s bound to have a successful career after high school. As a captain of the football team he is developing leaderships skills that he applies on and off the field. Ashton is a true role model to his teammates and classmates. Ashton remarks, “It’s all about working hard, but also being able to have fun with what you’re doing, combine those two things and there really isn’t anything you can’t accomplish.”
